Episode 7: Nervous System Regulation , Polyvagal Theory and Burnout Recovery with Gabrielle Juliano-Villani
EPISODE SUMMARY
What does nervous system regulation actually mean—and what does it look like when we move beyond the idea that regulation means being calm, peaceful, and “zen” all the time?
In this episode, LeNaya Smith Crawford sits down with Gabrielle Juliano-Villani, LCSW, to explore nervous system regulation, polyvagal theory, burnout, and the importance of understanding what our bodies are communicating to us. Gabrielle shares her journey from building a highly successful seven-figure group practice with 15 clinicians to experiencing deep burnout, ultimately selling the practice and beginning a much deeper journey of healing and self-discovery.
Together, LeNaya and Gabrielle unpack what nervous system regulation really means for therapists and healers, why regulation is about befriending and understanding your nervous system rather than forcing yourself to be calm, and how therapists can become a source of co-regulation for their clients. They also break down the three core principles of polyvagal theory—ventral vagal, sympathetic fight-or-flight, and dorsal vagal shutdown—and explore neuroception and the healing power of connection.
Gabrielle also shares practical tools for bringing nervous system regulation into the therapy room, including deep breathing, mindfulness, tapping, bilateral stimulation, binaural beats, glimmers, and the Polyvagal Ladder. She opens up about the deeper practices that supported her own healing from burnout, including sound healing, shamanic journeying, intuition, morning pages, and learning to slow down, delegate, and listen to the signals from her body.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Nervous system regulation does not mean being calm, peaceful, or “zen” all the time. Regulation is about understanding when you are activated and knowing what you need in those moments.
- Life naturally includes stress, anxiety, triggers, and difficult experiences. Regulation is about learning to move through those experiences rather than forcing yourself to remain calm.
- Nervous system regulation is a two-way street in the therapy room. Clients respond not only to what therapists say, but also to their presence, environment, body language, and nervous system state.
- Therapists can become a source of co-regulation for their clients, making their own nervous system awareness an important part of clinical work.
- Simple practices such as taking one deep breath, practicing mindfulness, tapping, bilateral stimulation, binaural beats, and noticing glimmers can help support regulation.
- Pausing and paying attention to the body's signals can provide valuable information. Feelings are not necessarily good or bad—they are information.
- Polyvagal theory describes three primary states: ventral vagal, sympathetic fight-or-flight, and dorsal vagal shutdown.
- Neuroception describes the body's ability to unconsciously take in information and respond to cues of safety or danger.
- Co-regulation is fundamental because humans are wired for connection and healing happens within relationships.
- The Polyvagal Ladder can help clients identify what each nervous system state looks and feels like, including their thoughts, beliefs, experiences, triggers, needs, and glimmers.
- Burnout cannot always be resolved simply by removing the source of stress. Deeper healing may require reconnecting with the body and addressing what is happening internally.
- Small shifts can create meaningful changes in the nervous system over time through neuroplasticity and the development of new neural pathways.
- Honoring the human behind the healer means allowing yourself grace, compassion, vulnerability, and authenticity—even when life feels difficult.
