Episode 10 : Points of Contact: A Simple Somatic Grounding Practice for Nervous System Regulation.

Episode Summary

Nervous system regulation doesn't always require complex training, sometimes it's as simple as helping someone notice where their body is already being held. This month's guided practice from The Holistic Therapist Podcast walks listeners through Points of Contact, a short somatic healing exercise built to support holistic mental health by reminding the body that it's safe, supported, and here.

LeNaya Smith Crawford leads the practice slowly, starting with a few rounds of cleansing breath before guiding listeners to notice the places where the body meets something solid: the feet on the floor, the sit bones in a chair, the back against a pillow, the hands resting in the lap or on the heart. From there she invites gentle, optional pressure at each point of contact, then a release, so listeners can feel the difference for themselves rather than just being told about it.

This isn't a practice designed to force relaxation. It's an invitation to notice sensation, support, and choice with curiosity instead of judgment, which makes it a useful tool whether you're a therapist looking for something simple to offer clients or you're building your own somatic healing practice.

What Is the Points of Contact Practice?

Points of Contact is a grounding exercise that uses the body's physical support system, the floor, a chair, a pillow, your own lap, as an anchor back into the present moment. Rather than asking listeners to visualize or think their way into calm, it works through direct sensation: noticing pressure, warmth, texture, and weight at each point where the body is being held.

How the Grounding Practice Works

After settling into a comfortable seated or lying position and taking a few cleansing breaths, listeners are guided to bring attention to one or more points of contact: the feet meeting the floor, the sit bones meeting the chair, the back meeting a pillow, or the hands resting somewhere supportive. At each point, LeNaya asks simple, curious questions, is there pressure, warmth, texture, heaviness, is the sensation clear or subtle, easy or hard to identify. There's no wrong answer, and noticing nothing at all is treated as a valid response too.

Adding Gentle Pressure: A Somatic Experiment

Partway through, the practice adds a layer: pressing gently into each point of contact, holding through an inhale, and releasing on the exhale. This small experiment lets listeners feel a before and after, does the point of contact feel different once you've pressed and released, more supported, less supported, or simply different. It's a quick, embodied way to practice interoception rather than just define it.

Closing Reflection Questions

The practice closes with a few reflection prompts: what did it feel like to notice physical support, what was it like to have choices throughout the practice, did focusing on an external point of contact feel different from scanning the body internally, and what would support your body for the rest of the day. These questions are worth sitting with, journaling on, or bringing into a session with a client.

Why This Somatic Practice Matters for Holistic Therapists

Points of Contact is a low lift way to introduce somatic healing and nervous system regulation without needing a client to already understand the theory behind it. It's accessible, requires no props, and can be adapted to a full session or just a few grounding minutes at the start or end of one, making it a practical addition to trauma informed and integrative therapy work.

Resources Mentioned

This is a guided practice episode, so there are no outside frameworks or citations. It pairs well with LeNaya's teaching episode, Somatics: The Body's Path to Healing, which covers the concepts behind the practice, nervous system regulation, dysregulation, and the vagus nerve.
